Character Info
Nov. 24th, 2014 10:31 amName: Kyrie Riven (Pronounced 'Kee-ree')
Age: 27 (Physically 16)
Species: Vampire
World Description:
Kyrie's world is somewhat complicated, intertwining fantasy, steampunk, and folklore. The land itself is one enormous crescent shaped continent, with a series of islands arcing from the center of the crescent and south, curving to form a nearly intertwining arc with the main continent. The mainland has a variety of cities and habitats, ranging from gloomy swamps, to great forests, volcanic peaks, and just about everything in between. Much of the land is beautiful, and nearly untamed, even with all the civilization.
The island in the dead center of the crescent contains the capitol, a beautiful, elaborate floating metropolis. The city showcases the pinnacle of the world's technology, combining both magic and machine in harmony to benefit the lives of everyone. Those who seek fame and fortune quickly often venture to the capitol city to do so, as it is the head of nearly everything. Entertainment, politics, business, you name it, there's likely an opportunity for it here. Scattered across the main continent and other islands are other cities, and while on the ground, each of them has their own charm. The greatest of the cities are the Elven, Dwarven, Kitsune, and Dragon. Travel across the world is usually done by airship, boat, or of course, by foot.
The populace is generally led by an Emperor or Empress, following one of the stronger bloodlines. Usually one of either a royal lineage, or one of 'strong blood'. The Emperor/Empress resides in the capitol, but there are smaller nations that they rule over. Each nation is ruled by a different leader, governing their own races and cities, however they are ultimately answerable to the Emperor. There's actually very little of a military force, even with all the nations combined. However, there are definitely smaller groups of fighters and assassins within each nation. While everything is usually quite peaceful, there are some who would see that peace destroyed, see everything thrown into chaos. And within that chaos, they would take the throne for themselves.
There's somewhat of a 'main' religion, and for the most part, it mirrors Shintoism (specifically shrine/folk Shintoism). Not everyone follows it, but it's the ruling belief in this world. However, it's not exactly the same as it is in our world. There are a small handful of deities specific to the setting, such as Silennia, the goddess of the moon, and Coronis, the god of the sun. Even for those who don't follow it, they generally believe that there's some sort of afterlife as a spirit waiting for them. Those who die and are not judged to spend their eternity in a hellish, lonely underworld do tend to return as spirits, part of the land they grew up on. There are also lesser gods and goddesses that are specific to certain races.
The technology level is somewhat difficult to explain. It's both advanced and not very advanced at the same time. Most contraptions are a combination of metal and wood, and many also include magic, such as the airships, using generators fueled by magic infused stones to stay afloat. There are no motor cars, but there are steam-powered trains and boats, as well as tools such as drills and chainsaws. Guns are generally extremely expensive, and they tend to be hard to come by, often only being revolvers/handguns, with the rarer rifle. There's no computers, or phones, but there are radios! There are even radio talk shows and music that air on a regular basis. Indoor plumbing and electric lighting/heat is also a thing. Lighting is a bit more of a luxury, though.
This world also incorporates magic, ranging from healing spells by calling the natural energy around you, from elemental magic such as fire, ice, and lightning. Magic is actually difficult to use, and requires not only a considerable amount of practice and training, but you must also have some sort of magic in your bloodline, no matter how far back it goes. Therefore, the average human will very likely not have any sort of magic abilities whatsoever, but many of the 'Blooded', elves, and even half-bloods will. Most magic is spoken, and the strongest magics have been woven into song, powerful hymns that reverberate with the wielder and the magic they command. As a rule of thumb, any one person can only command one elemental magic, although those of exceptionally strong bloodlines have been known to have a rare dual-wielder.
In addition to the normal myriad of animal and plant life, there are also a variety of monsters and other fantasy/folklore creatures! If you can find it in a different fantasy setting, you can probably find it here. From phoenixes, nezumi, unicorns, vampires and dragons, to ghosts, kappa, alraune, and giant insects. Many of these creatures are also quite sentient, and while they may not always have a human level of intellect, some even surpass it. Especially dragons, the oldest race. True dragons are a rarity nowadays, most of them taking human form and hoarding what they want. Few dare cross them.
The people are also a variety of races. Humans are fairly normal and the most common, followed by the Elves (who call themselves the Forestborn), and Dwarves (Earthborn). Next up are the 'Blooded', the descendants of older races, such as Dragons, Kitsune, Phoenixes, and the like. While they appear mostly human, they retain a few characteristics of their noble bloodlines. They are also usually capable of wielding magic to a formidable degree. Nearly every ruler in the past three hundred years or so have been a 'Blooded'. While there are the normal 'Blooded', there are those with diluted bloodlines as well, usually called 'Half-Bloods'. Half-Bloods aren't all that different from their full-blooded kin, although they generally have a more monstrous appearance. Spirits that live among the general populace are unbelievably rare, but they do exist. They generally then to keep to themselves, but are usually wise and are sought out for advice. Spirits look like they did in life, but with a less-corporeal appearance.
Personality:
The first thing most people notice about Kyrie is that she's kind of fidgety around new people. Having led a mostly sheltered life, her social skills aren't exactly the greatest, and that honestly unnerves her. What if she says something that upsets someone? What if she's annoying them? What if they just don't want to talk to her? That's just part of it. She's just awkward and shy in general at first. She may be awkward for a while, but she does eventually warm up to people, especially if they're kind or seem nice to her. While she's begun to overcome her quirk of speaking in third person, it still occasionally slips out every now and then.
She's naturally a very kind individual. No matter the person, Kyrie does her best to be polite and try to put on a smile for everyone else's sake. There's a lot of trouble in the world, and as a priestess of the moon goddess, it's her duty to try and wash some of that away. If she sees someone injured or looking down, its in her nature to be concerned, and she'll do her best to see if she can help, although she won't force it upon them if they resist. Even if its someone she doesn't know at all, Kyrie will put aside just about anything to help someone in need, even if it means abandoning an important mission or the food on her stovetop, or sleep. Even if she's in pain, she'll push it aside to try to make someone else happy. It's very, very rare that you'll find Kyrie being selfish. As kind and helpful as she tries to be, Kyrie's greatest fear is failing and being useless. That's why she tries so hard.
In addition to being somewhat awkward around other people, it's not difficult to embarrass her. Whether it's an honest compliment, a joke, or a dirty innuendo, flirting, or something else that might come across as personal, you can turn her into a blushing, stuttering mess in seconds. It's easy to distract her this way, and it'll preoccupy her mind. Poor thing. Aside from being too kind, this is probably her greatest weakness. Kyrie's mind is pretty innocent, although she has thoughts much like any other girl would from time to time. If she's around someone she has a crush on, she's generally a bit more jittery than normal, and she has a hard time looking at them without turning a deep red.
Kyrie wishes more than anything that she could just lead a normal, happy life with a lot of friends. It's a little too optimistic of a dream, but even as a vampire, she believes that maybe there's still some hope that it'll come true one day. She also hates fighting, whether it be physical or verbal. If she sees or hears it, she tries to stay out of it unless she needs to either help a friend, or protect someone in need. Unfortunately, the battlefield always needs healers to tend to the wounded. While Kyrie wishes that wasn't the case, she doesn't complain if she can save some lives.
The one thing Kyrie is truly confident in is her abilities as a priestess. She knows she can heal people and make them smile, even if they're in pain. She just has that effect on people. She's also very devoted to her goddess, and will go to extreme lengths to prove herself a worthy priestess. She always has specific times set aside for praying, as well as the monthly ritual of the full moon. Nothing keeps her from her duties as a priestess, and trying to get in the way of that is one of the very few ways you can make her angry, aside from fighting with her friends, or making unfavorable comments about them or her goddess. What she doesn't tell anyone is that she actually communes with Silennia. Kyrie is what few would call one of the 'Chosen', an individual blessed with unique abilities by a god or goddess.
Her vampirism is a subject she...isn't entirely comfortable talking about. Sure, she's long since gotten used to it, but it still kind of bothers her. Just as she was once terrified of monsters, she knows there are many people who feel the same way. There's also a bit of guilt mixed in there. While she can eat other food, as a vampire, she does need to occasionally drink blood to survive. While it isn't truly harmful to her 'victim', she still feels bad about it. Sadly, that's something that will probably never change.
Background:
Kyrie was born into a religious family of priests and priestesses devoted to the moon goddess, Silennia. As such, she was fairly sheltered from the events of the world as she underwent training to become a proper priestess. It...wasn't particularly easy, either. She had to memorize dozens of prayers, rituals, and other habits befitting her station, as well as the ability to use magic. Because she was raised like this, she never really got to do much socializing with others, especially those her age. So she became fairly shy and nervous around people she didn't know. However, she never let that beat her. Kyrie was determined that she could help people, and she would try her best no matter what. Her best asset was her magic, which she could use to heal others, and while it was originally extremely limited, it didn't take too long for her to nearly master being able to heal all but the most grievous injuries. After the age of thirteen, she spent two years learning more about the outside world, of politics, dangers of the world, and what to expect when she set out on her pilgrimage in two years time. Kyrie was honestly frightened of monsters. Many of them were so...fearsome. However, she could not back out of this, or her family would be disgraced. So she prepared herself.
At the age of fifteen, it was time for Kyrie to depart on her pilgrimage. To travel the world with a small company of other priests and hired help to search for people in need. While still genuinely afraid of all the possible things that could go wrong, Kyrie believed that the moon goddess would watch over her journey and protect her from harm. And that seemed to be the case! There were several small conflicts that were avoided, and Kyrie found many people to heal and help however she could, boosting her own faith in herself, and giving others faith in her goddess. She believed it was only because of her faith in the goddess that she was able to overcome her own fears. She even met a few monsters that didn't seem so bad, which started to alleviate those particular fears. As the year went by, things seemed to get better and better. Kyrie was feeling more confident in herself, and she was honestly very pleased to be able to help people as she was. She got along spectacularly with the others in her group, and they'd all come to acknowledge her as a proper priestess...and a really good cook. She got a little crazy with new recipes at times, but everyone ended up loving it. The first year seemed to go by so fast, and with two years to go, Kyrie started to believe it might go by without incident.
Unfortunately, she couldn't have been more wrong. While travelling across the forests north of the dragon mountains, Kyrie's group was attacked by a group that had actually been lying in wait for the Empress that was supposed to have been traveling in that direction. Kyrie's caravan however, happened to be the first one they'd spotted and assumed it was their target. Upon realizing their mistake, they...didn't stop. They made short work of the peaceful travelers, and left them bloody, broken and dying in the road, their caravan and belongings ablaze. Barely hanging on to life, all Kyrie could do was try to pray to their goddess, pray that they might survive. Just before she blacked out, she recalled one sight. A pale, black haired man with red streaks in his hair knelt over her.
"Hang in there." "All will be well, child."
When Kyrie awoke, something felt...off. Okay, besides the fact she was in a coffin. Her heart wasn't beating, and she felt cold. Was this what death was like? She'd never heard of anything like this. Her curiosity and deep thoughts were pushed away in a panic though, as she tried to scratch and push her way out of the coffin. The lid just...popped right off. Sitting in a chair on the opposite side of the room she was in was the man who she'd seen before everything went blank. Despite her initial panic, something about this man soothed her. He told her all about himself. His name was Vane Riven, a vampire who led a peace-keeping group. Then it dawned on her why she was still 'alive'. He'd turned her. She was a vampire. Kyrie was absolutely terrified of that fact. It took days to convince her to eat for the first time, and to convince her that blood was not the only thing she could eat. It took even longer to snap her out of the down mood she'd been in. Her life wasn't over. It had only truly begun! After some pep talks and praying to her goddess, Kyrie believed that she could still help people, and maybe, just maybe, this would help her do that. She was also shocked to find that even as a vampire, her goddess had not abandoned her, allowing her to keep her blessings and spells. Of course, it helped that Vane took her under his wing, giving her the guidance she needed as a fellow vampire too.
She spent the next few years learning everything she could about vampires, and in doing so, her own limits, new weaknesses, new strengths. There were many things she had to learn, like how to control herself around the scent of blood. That took almost a year to train herself to hold back in itself. Most of the rest was pretty simple, and aside from a few accidents involving holy water around other vampires, everything went relatively smoothly. She even had a few perks because she was a priestess of the moon goddess, such as immunity to most holy signs and healing magic. While her magic would harm other vampires, it still worked on the living very well. Her own injuries needed to be healed by either prolonged exposure to moonlight or resting in her coffin. Those years were spent mostly around a manor in the northern mountains where Vane had much more influence. A safe haven for not only vampires, but other monsters and humans that sought peace as well. While Kyrie had been frightened of monsters at first, her time among them began to ease that. It seemed that while there were bad monsters, there were some who were pretty normal and kind!
After she was finally settled in and relatively used to her new life, Vane started allowing Kyrie to accompany groups on their missions. Most were simply diplomatic in nature, while others were to protect important individuals. While Kyrie wasn't much of a fighter, it was her healing magic that made her useful on those particular missions. For the rest? Well, she was a good cook, and she was generally well liked by the rest of Vane's coven. While she was really nervous at first, afraid she'd screw things up, Kyrie actually very much enjoyed helping everyone, and hearing Vane praise her was worth it, and she even converted a few members of the coven into followers of the moon goddess. Being a vampire wasn't so bad at all, but for a priestess to become a monster was pretty ironic. That aside, her new life was actually better than she'd first expected. She even sent letters back to her family, although she omitted the fact she was a vampire, she did inform them that the rest of her colleagues had been killed in an attack. She couldn't bring herself to tell them the full truth, as much as it pained her.
However, life moved on. Ever since the night she'd been turned into a vampire, Kyrie began hearing a woman's voice in her dreams, increasingly so as the full moon approached. She quickly discovered that this was the voice of her Goddess, and began to commune with her on a regular basis. While the information she was given was vague, Silennia did inform her that something was afoot in Crescentia. A shadowy force was beginning to make their moves, and a long forgotten Goddess was stirring from her slumber...
After a decade of living with Vane and his coven, an attack by an unknown force split them up and destroyed their home. Unable to find Vane or her other friends, Kyrie fled into unknown territory for her. She ended up in the city of Szem, where she met another troubled young woman by the name of Vellsha Himri. Oddly enough, the two became fast friends. A healer, and a girl who was constantly ill. They also ran into a dragon-blooded swordswoman who took it upon herself to act as these two girl's guardian. Her name was Aethelia Evergreen. This trio set off more or less as an adventuring party, although they tended to stick to...less violent requests than most. Gathering herbs, item deliveries and the like.
It wasn't until they reached the deserts that they met their next party member. A snarky archer named Fesìr, who decided these innocent fools needed someone who was more aware of the world to aid them. While a small party, they became almost like a second family to Kyrie, who did her best to help them out as she sought out her missing coven.
Abilities:
Priestess
Due to her family's bloodline and her position as a priestess of Silennia, Kyrie has access to a number of rituals, spells and blessings. Healing magic is the foremost of these, allowing her to mend minor injuries, broken bones, and even more severe, life-threatening wounds. However, the more severe the injury, the harder it is to heal it. Healing anything more than a minor scrape or similar wound requires a fair amount of concentration and prayer.
In order for her to be able to use her magic, Kyrie has to spend an hour every night praying to Silennia. The only exceptions that her goddess makes is if an individual is incapable of doing so for some reason or another.
Despite her being a vampire, being a priestess grants her immunity to the otherwise harmful effects of holy symbols, blessed water, and healing magic on vampires. Instead, they work as normal on her, and she may continue to use them without a problem. However, this does not mean she can use them on other vampires. They remain affected by them as they would be.
Vampire
Of course, being turned into a vampire granted Kyrie with a handful of other abilities, such as a body that will never age or degrade, night vision, being able to walk on walls, immunity to poisons, and enhanced reflexes. Vampires are notoriously hard to kill, and Kyrie being a priestess makes it more difficult. However, a stake to the heart or dismemberment and incineration is still capable of ending her life. Anything else, she can simply regenerate from naturally (or use her magic to heal). Speaking of regeneration, she does not possess the same ability to do so as normal vampires. In order to regenerate, she must bask in moonlight.
There are some downsides to being a vampire, however. Kyrie has to spend at least one night a week sleeping in her coffin, or she'll become progressively weaker, losing her ability to walk on walls and her enhanced reflexes. (However, since a vampire is attuned to their coffin, they can haul it around with them if necessary. If a coffin is destroyed, a new one can be made as well.) Her body is also always cool to the touch. As for sunlight, while it won't kill her, prolonged exposure will make her ill, and her eyes are sensitive to it.
There's also the need for blood. While she can eat normal food, Kyrie does require a pint of blood or so every week in order to 'live'. A vampire who doesn't feed on blood will go comatose until fed. Most vampires have a friend or someone who they'll feed from normally. A vampire's bite is venomous, although not deadly. Their venom acts as a sort of painkiller/aphrodisiac, causing a pleasant warmth to spread from the bite through the victim's body. It's also highly addictive.
Kyrie cannot turn anyone into a vampire. Only those who've been a vampire for 100 years or more gains the additive to their venom that allows them to turn someone into a vampire. They also have to completely drain the blood from their victim.
Other
While she can get a little crazy in the kitchen, Kyrie is an amazing cook. She can take something super simple, and turn it into something amazingly delicious. That, and she just really likes cooking. It's a fun hobby, and it keeps her busy when she doesn't have anything else to do.
She's also received training in basic first aid, which compliments her healing magic nicely, especially when it comes to taking care of her vampire brethren.
Kyrie has a companion in the form of a small bat. She has no real special qualities, save that Kyrie can communicate with her, and the bat's life is linked to her own. As long as Kyrie lives, so does she.
